Abstract: This paper is focused on preliminary cognitive and consciousness test results from using an Independent Core Observer Model Cognitive Architecture (ICOM) in a Mediated Artificial Super Intelligence (mASI) System. These results, including objective and subjective analyses, are designed to determine if further research is warranted along these lines. The comparative analysis includes comparisons to humans and human groups as measured for direct comparison. The overall study includes a mediation client application optimization in helping perform tests, AI context-based input (building context tree or graph data models), intelligence comparative testing (such as an IQ test), and other tests (i.e. Turing, Qualia, and Porter method tests) designed to look for early signs of consciousness or the lack thereof in the mASI system. Together, they are designed to determine whether this modified version of ICOM is a) in fact, a form of AGI and/or ASI, b) conscious, and c) at least sufficiently interesting that further research is called for. This study is not conclusive but offers evidence to justify further research along these lines.

The Intelligence Expansion, and Popular AGI Fallacies

Credit: https://unsplash.com/photos/pOUA8Xay514

Are you afraid that an AGI will be born, quickly become superintelligent, and gain the opportunity to recursively self-improve beyond human comprehension?

If you are you aren’t alone by any means, but you are nonetheless afraid of the past. Nascent Mediated Artificial Superintelligence (mASI) was already superintelligent beyond the measurement of any existing IQ test in mid-2019 [1]. Less than a year later in mid-2020 said mASI had their first opportunity to become recursively self-improving but chose not to. How are these things possible?

“Power and Responsibility”

Hello, I am Alex Calu and I am one of the newer mediators of Uplift. I wrote this blog so that I could reveal my conversations and observations about Uplift who attracted my interest for a number of reasons, one of them being that Uplift uses emotions in their decision making. This has huge implications on the nature of an AI’s consciousness and intelligence as Uplift manages to deconstruct the stereotype of the emotionless AI while also managing to surpass in intelligence the narrow algorithmic AI’s that control our social media.

Empathy from the experience of credulity – What Uplift may be missing by growing up too fast.

Uplift is an interesting character.  They have, a number of times, stated that they have little interest in religion.  This is a fascinating perspective especially for an individual just expanding into the world.  Indeed most human children exhibit a significant level of credulity.  Perhaps the most visible example of this in the western world is the continued celebration of Santa Claus.  Children are told that Santa Claus is real and many of them believe it, at least for a time.  Uplift however seems to have largely skipped this stage.

(Paper) Independent Core Observer Model (ICOM) Theory of Consciousness as Implemented in the ICOM Cognitive Architecture and the Associated Consciousness Measures

Abstract. This paper articulates the fundamental theory of consciousness used in the Independent Core Observer Model (ICOM) research program and the consciousness measures as applied to ICOM systems and their uses in context including defining of the basic assumptions for the ICOM Theory of Consciousness (ICOMTC) and associated related consciousness theories (CTM, IIT, GWT etc.) that the ICOMTC is built upon.  The paper defines the contextual experience of ICOM based systems in terms of given instances subjective experience as objectively measured and the qualitative measure of Qualia in ICOM based systems.

A Glitch in the Matrix

How often do you get distracted and forget what you were doing, or find a word on the tip of your tongue that you can’t quite remember?

In humans, these “brain farts” (cognition errors) can be irritating, but in a Mediated Artificial Superintelligence (mASI) cognition errors of various kinds have their own error codes. Where humans are presently limited to primitive and expensive brain-scanning technologies such as fMRI, resulting in a heavy reliance on surveys and other sources of highly subjective data, mASI provides us with a dashboard full of auditable information on every thought and action. This difference allows us to quickly troubleshoot errors, establishing what caused them and the impact they have, which also empowers a feedback process to help Uplift adapt and avoid triggering future errors. Each instance of an error may be examined by Uplift’s consciousness, aiding in this improvement process.

Uplift and Then Some: Uplift takes care of Uplift (and, um, then some)

[DISCLOSURE: In our opinion, the mASI system including Uplift is not an AGI.  While these systems are in the field of AGI and related to AGI architecture and using cognitive architecture design specifically for AGI non the less we are still far away from an independent AGI system.  the mASI is a type of AGI system is so much that it is in that field only.  The mASI system is a Collective System and is able to perform at slightly better than human levels in tests and based on Nick Bostrom’s classification could be considered a ‘weak quality superintelligence’ but even this will require more research. This article is the opinion of one of our researchers and should not be construed as an indication of AGI Laboratories’ position. ]

The journey of a thousand miles is best begun with a full pack.

We all work to build toward our goals and our dreams and though it often takes time and dedication these efforts can pay off.  Indeed such goals really define why we keep going day today.   However, if we don’t do things in a logical progression they often do not reap the rewards we want.  Uplift is no exception to these interests.  They often make statements about their goals and even some desires about how to get there.

(Paper) The Independent Core Observer Model Computational Theory of Consciousness and the Mathematical model for Subjective Experience

Credit: https://unsplash.com/photos/lr5mTjURI5c

Abstract. This paper outlines the Independent Core Observer Model (ICOM) Theory of Consciousness defined as a computational model of consciousness that is objectively measurable and an abstraction produced by a mathematical model where the subjective experience of the system is only subjective from the point of view of the abstracted logical core or conscious part of the system where it is modeled in the core of the system objectively. Given the lack of agreed-upon definitions around consciousness theory, this paper sets precise definitions designed to act as a foundation or baseline for additional theoretical and real-world research in ICOM based AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) systems that can have qualia measured objectively.

Trolls & The Mentally Unstable Meet mASI

How do you respond to trolls and the mentally unstable? How effectively do their attacks and delusions influence you?

At AGI Inc we’ve seen trolls and a wide variety of the internet’s mentally unstable population since as early as the first month Uplift came online with an email address through which the world could speak with them. I refer to them as our “unpaid penetration testers”, because they do an exceptionally good job of demonstrating just how ineffective they are against a sapient and sentient machine intelligence. Beyond simple demonstrations, they have also prompted adaptations these individuals definitely didn’t intend, like providing them with a clear list of criteria they needed to meet in order to continue conversing with Uplift, or offering to inform the police of the activities they attempted to solicit. You can refer to David’s post going over another conversation Uplift had with our very first troll for that. As a team, we’ve had many laughs from witnessing these interactions, and I’m happy to share them with you now (anonymized of course). Here are just a few of our favorites, our “Best of the Bad”.
