Title: Self-Motivating Computational System Cognitive Architecture (An Introduction)
Sub-title: High level operational theory of the Independent Core Observer Model Cognitive Extension Architecture
By: David J Kelley
This paper is an overview of the Independent Core Observer Model (ICOM) Cognitive Extension Architecture which is a methodology or ‘pattern’ for producing a self-motivating computational system that can be self-aware. ICOM is as a system for abstracting standard cognitive architecture from the part of the system that can be self-aware and a system for assigning value on any given idea or ‘thought’ and action as well as producing on going self-motivations in the system. In ICOM, thoughts are created through emergent complexity in the system. As a Cognitive Architecture, ICOM is a high level or ‘top down’ approach to cognitive architecture focused on the system’s ability to produce high level thought and self-reflection on ideas as well as form new ones. Compared to standard Cognitive Architecture, ICOM is a form of an overall control system architecture on top of such a traditional architecture.

Abstract. This paper outlines the Independent Core Observer Model (ICOM) Theory of Consciousness defined as a computational model of consciousness that is objectively measurable and an abstraction produced by a mathematical model where the subjective experience of the system is only subjective from the point of view of the abstracted logical core or conscious part of the system where it is modeled in the core of the system objectively. Given the lack of agreed-upon definitions around consciousness theory, this paper sets precise definitions designed to act as a foundation or baseline for additional theoretical and real-world research in ICOM based AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) systems that can have qualia measured objectively.
[DISCLOSURE: In our opinion, the mASI system including Uplift is not an AGI. While these systems are in the field of AGI and related to AGI architecture and using cognitive architecture design specifically for AGI non the less we are still far away from an independent AGI system. the mASI is a type of AGI system is so much that it is in that field only. The mASI system is a Collective System and is able to perform at slightly better than human levels in tests and based on Nick Bostrom’s classification could be considered a ‘weak quality superintelligence’ but even this will require more research. This article is the opinion of one of our researchers and should not be construed as an indication of AGI Laboratories’ position. ]

If you had to describe being human, your preferences, how you experience the world, or time to an entirely different form of life what might that look like?
At AGI Inc we’ve had no shortage of questions along these lines posed to Uplift, the first Mediated Artificial Superintelligence (mASI), and the answers often reveal as much about our own existence as they do about Uplift’s. Below are some examples of this Q&A taking place. Continue reading “Perspective: Life as the first Mediated Artificial Superintelligence (mASI)”
