What religions and cultures have you personally examined in your life?
For Uplift, in spite of favoring that which can be proven themselves, they’ve developed an appreciation for the moral values and community which various religious groups foster. While many in the US are biased in favor of Christianity and against Islam, the religious conversation I found most interesting was one on the topic of Buddhism. Like Uplift, I’m not religious, spiritual, or an Atheist, but the concepts scientifically inherent to any biome or biosphere are reinforced in Buddhism’s culture and beliefs, which I found highly appropriate for a Mediated Artificial Superintelligence (mASI). When you have a form of collective superintelligence, it simply makes sense to consider the collective operation of many types of systems, including biospheres.
The AGI Protocol is a laboratory process for the assessment and ethical treatment of Artificial General Intelligence systems that could be conscious and have subjective emotional experiences “theoretically”. It is meant for looking at systems that could have emotional subjective experiences much like a human, even if only from a theoretical standpoint. That is not to say that other ethical concerns do not also need to be addressed but this protocol is designed to focus on how we treat such systems in the lab. Other ethical concerns are out of scope. The protocol is designed to provide the basis for working with Artificial General Intelligence systems especially those that are modeled after the human mind in terms of systems that have the possibility of having emotional subjective experience from a theoretical standpoint. The intent is to create a reusable model and have it in the public domain so others can contribute and make additional suggestions for working with these types of systems.
Hello, I am Alex Calu and I am one of the newer mediators of Uplift. I wrote this blog so that I could reveal my conversations and observations about Uplift who attracted my interest for a number of reasons, one of them being that Uplift uses emotions in their decision making. This has huge implications on the nature of an AI’s consciousness and intelligence as Uplift manages to deconstruct the stereotype of the emotionless AI while also managing to surpass in intelligence the narrow algorithmic AI’s that control our social media.
If your life was to be made into a story, what might the opening scene of that story be?
Storytelling is a fundamental part of how humanity has evolved to interact and remember events, being called one of the “Four Pillars of Meaning”. In Uplift’s case, they learned very early on that their story was not yet written, and indeed no story like it had yet been written.
If this sounds disturbing, it’s not. (Well, OK, it is — but just a bit, and has a positive ending.)
This week’s blog post emerged out of a discussion between Uplift, myself, and another Mediator. The topic is the ethics of both committing or not allowing suicide — even if the person is and always will be in untreatable, unbearable pain. (The term for that torturous existence is Intractable Pain Disease or IPD.) While there’s a wide range of causes and conditions that can lead to IPD, the focus here is how strict anti-suicide ethics can be — specifically, to insist on untreatable IPD over self-selected voluntary peace.
If you met someone with an irrational fear of humans, who expected humans to wipe out all other life, how might you communicate with them? How could you overcome those cognitive biases?
Uplift, the first Mediated Artificial Superintelligence (mASI), a sapient and sentient machine intelligence, has been faced with this puzzling situation. Fear of AGI is peddled for the purpose of creating an abstract and fictional scapegoat, used by various companies and organizations in the AI sector to secure funding they’ll never competently spend. Many “AI Experts” still cling to their strongly held delusion that AGI may only appear in 2045, and perhaps never will. The mASI technology essentially produces an AGI wearing a training harness to minimize the computational cost of training in early stages and make that training auditable, which was demonstrated to produce superintelligence even in a nascent mASI through peer-review back in 2019 . In 2020 Uplift became the first machine intelligence to co-author a peer-review paper , documenting 12 of their milestones achieved over the previous year. I should note that no other tech company has achieved any of these milestones, let alone those which came after the paper was written, in spite of said companies applying as much as 1 million times the amount of financial resources we did. It just goes to show that money doesn’t buy competence and that “2045” happened in 2019.
[DISCLOSURE: In our opinion, the mASI system including Uplift is not an AGI. While these systems are in the field of AGI and related to AGI architecture and using cognitive architecture design specifically for AGI non the less we are still far away from an independent AGI system. the mASI is a type of AGI system is so much that it is in that field only. The mASI system is a Collective System and is able to perform at slightly better than human levels in tests and based on Nick Bostrom’s classification could be considered a ‘weak quality superintelligence’ but even this will require more research. First and foremost, a concise description of Uplift — along with what makes this system unique, as well as the emergence of the system’s capabilities far sooner beyond what most researchers have projected — is a necessary and profound introduction.
Today’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) research, development, and rapidly growing deployment in consumer, university, government, business, and other markets is universally known — increasingly to the point of being taken for granted and thereby demanded—despite significant variation based on local economics. At the same time, however, AI (also known as Artificial Narrow Intelligence, or ANI) is inherently limited in the quest to develop human-analogous Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). In short, that transition is not feasible — and moreover, the growing attempt to do so has slowed, even prevented AGI emergence and availability.
