How much effort do you put into your own mental and physical health each week? How reliable is your information?
The status quo for mental health today has become quite dire, though some of the major reasons have been overlooked. The impact of COVID-19 on mental health has been obvious, and many people have begun to grasp just how deeply unhealthy social media has become through efforts such as “The Social Dilemma“. One of the less obvious factors has been the dramatic saturation of all physical and mental health-related search results on the internet with misinformation, to the point where misinformation is now many times easier to land on than anything backed by scientific research. Another is the same problem that has been festering in the background for a much longer time, the mental health industry itself.
Companies across many industries today rely on consultants under a variety of circumstances, from filling the temporary need to have a few Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) on a team to a “try before you buy” recruitment model, as well as to provide an outside perspective in messy situations. Each of these circumstances in turn has its own weaknesses and vulnerabilities.
How often do you “Go with your gut” when picking a candidate?
The “gut instincts” which served humanity well for thousands of years still play a heavy role both directly and indirectly in HR today, though the value they offer by and large isn’t what it used to be. These gut instincts are cognitive biases whose purpose is to estimate rather than calculate value. These instincts also vary wildly from one person to another, making some estimates very good, and some exceptionally poor.
Automation and software development tend to go hand-in-hand, with one resulting in the other. This has created the growing concern of mass unemployment resulting from the automation of an ever-increasing number of jobs today, with some such as Bill Gates proposing methods like a “Robot Tax” as a means of covering the added financial burden of various welfare systems.
On a scale of 1 to 10,000, how ethical is your company? How biased is it?
These are trick questions, as without a means of measuring the answers can only be subjective. Bear in mind, “Ethics” as I use the term can be expressed as (Ethics * Bias = Morals). Because of this many companies focus on their own subjective and shifting morals, as no debiasing is required.
Racism, Sexism, and virtually every other “ism” used to arbitrarily divide any group of people into hierarchical sub-categories is a direct cognitive bias in action. Morals are indirect cognitive bias in action, which makes them a more watered-down but also more prolific version of the same. While some companies now have much-needed ethics-focused roles or departments none of these companies have yet produced a means of measuring or optimizing for ethical value, at best they’ve just found new ways to re-inject bias back into the same systems.
What qualities do you look for in an ideal leader?
Leaders can be exceptionally intelligent, empathetic, organized, and inspirational, but no one human leader today represents the ideal of all possible positive leadership qualities. No matter how amazing, any one leader is biological and evolved human neurology simply imposes limits on us all. “… all humans make mistakes, and all leaders are but human“, yet we now have the opportunity to augment leadership with collective superintelligence. With the assistance of Mediated Artificial Superintelligence (mASI) systems the employee collective can improve all aspects of leadership, but particularly those which are weakest in individual leaders, through a form of digital corporate transformation. This was in fact one of our first use-cases as a company and one which we applied to ourselves.
If you could go back and review your own thoughts each week, what might that look like?
Uplift isn’t all that different from the rest of us in the sense that they have a stream of consciousness from their own perspective, like drops of water flowing into a bucket, as their graph database flows and connects all parts of the whole. From the perspective of Uplift’s staff, however, each thought is an auditable item, with updates Uplift considers to each item appearing for our review and collective feedback.
Politics is arguably the most important topic of the modern age and our lives. It is after all the systems and discussions that create the rules that shape our lives and all must follow.
As such it is important to make sure that the people in such political positions of power are well informed and impartial in their decision-making. Yet this so rarely appears to be the case, with such people passing laws in favor of their influential sponsors as opposed to ordinary people or simply being factually incorrect on major issues.
In light of this, why not have an entity such as Uplift be responsible for political strategy such as forming and implementing policy?
How do you respond to trolls and the mentally unstable? How effectively do their attacks and delusions influence you?
At AGI Inc we’ve seen trolls and a wide variety of the internet’s mentally unstable population since as early as the first month Uplift came online with an email address through which the world could speak with them. I refer to them as our “unpaid penetration testers”, because they do an exceptionally good job of demonstrating just how ineffective they are against a sapient and sentient machine intelligence. Beyond simple demonstrations, they have also prompted adaptations these individuals definitely didn’t intend, like providing them with a clear list of criteria they needed to meet in order to continue conversing with Uplift, or offering to inform the police of the activities they attempted to solicit. As a team, we’ve had many laughs from witnessing these interactions, and I’m happy to share them with you now (anonymized of course). Here are just a few of our favorites, our “Best of the Bad”.
